Where did Teriyaki Sauce come from?
The distinct teriyaki flavor that we all know and enjoy originated in traditional Japanese cuisine. The word ‘teriyaki’ (てりやき) comes from the Japanese words for ‘shining’: ‘teri’ (てり) and ‘broiling’: ‘yaki’ (やき). It referred to the technique of glazing broiled meats and fish with a mixture of sugar and soy sauce. The sugar glaze put the ‘teri’ in the ‘yaki’!
The Japanese brought teriyaki sauce to Hawaii, and Americans have loved it ever since! We’ve even come up with our own versions of the authentic Hawaiian Teriyaki sauce, and recreated this delicious sweet-and-salty flavor blend. We like Teriyaki thick and creamy on our meat and fish, and we even add it to shredded beef in burgers, pour it over our veggies, and use it as a condiment at barbecues!
